What is a nursing pillow and do I really need one?

A nursing pillow is a curved cushion that wraps around your waist, lifting baby up to chest height during feeds so you're not hunching over them. Most mums find one essential for breastfeeding because it takes the strain off your back, shoulders, and arms during what can be 8 to 12 feeds a day in the early weeks. Even if you're bottle feeding, a nursing pillow makes long feeds much more comfortable and frees up your hands.

Can I use a nursing pillow for a newborn?

Yes, from day one. The pillow lifts your newborn to the breast in the side-lying or cradle position, supporting their head and body so you don't have to hold their full weight. Newborns feed for 30 to 45 minutes at a time, so the support a pillow gives makes a real difference to your shoulders and posture in the early weeks. Always stay alert and supervise; nursing pillows are for feeding, not for unsupervised sleep.

Can a nursing pillow be used for bottle feeding and tummy time?

Yes. A nursing pillow works just as well for bottle feeding as breastfeeding, supporting baby at the right angle to reduce wind and reflux. How do I clean a nursing pillow?

The outer cover unzips and machine washes at 30°C on a gentle cycle. We'd recommend washing it before first use and then every week or so during the early newborn weeks, when leaks, spit-up, and posset are constant. The inner pillow itself should be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then air-dried. Lots of mums buy a spare cover so they can swap between washes.
